Denmark's Nicolas Winding Refn makes an electrifying return to Hollywood filmmaking with this 1980s-style noir, proper down to the synth score and neon-pink credits (he launched hellos American debut, Fear X, in 2003). Ryan Gosling puts his implacable quality to excellent use as an L.A. stunt driver whose world disintegrates when he falls for the wrong girl (Carey Mulligan). Irene is rarely a femme fatale, but her incarcerated husband, Standard (Oscar Isaac), is some other story. When her automotive breaks down, Driver counsels the auto save where he works with Shannon (Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston). The two start spending time together, but then Standard returns from jail. Driver maintains his distance except he uncovers that Standard owes protection cash. If he doesn't pay up, Irene and their son will suffer, so Driver provides to handle the wheel all through a heist, a job with which he has more than just a little expertise, as the riveting opening sequence shows..
